An abandoned baby girl whose head was partially eaten by rats and pigs, is now struggling for survival, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported.
She was named Baby Jibike by the Hearts of Gold Children‘s Hospice, Surulere, a Lagos-based NGO, where she has been receiving treatment since she was rescued from a dump site.
The four-month-old baby was rescued by a police officer in January 2008, while she was about two months old.
The children‘s hospice is an orphanage under the care of Mrs. Laja Adedoyin.
“We are still treating the wound on her head. She requires urgent medical intervention and we are praying she will survive,” Adedoyin said.
“We expect the head to heal in six months, but if by that time the hair on her head does not grow properly, we may have to take her abroad for surgery.
“I am calling on Nigerians and corporate organisations to come to the aid of Jibike through generous donations.
“We may need to carry out skin grafting on her,‘‘ she said.
The Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, which will be five years on October 2, currently takes care of 41 children, most of whom have cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disease caused by damage to the brain before or during birth, resulting in difficulties of movement and speech.
