A Marathon of a different Kind

With two London marathon medals under Dayo’s belt, Saturday 19 July 2008 was going to prove to be a different kind of marathon for Dayo to complete.

The day officially began at 8 o’clock that Saturday morning in East London. Dayo had an appointment with an executive lady who wanted his help to prepare her for a training position with a national organisational. This was not going to be no ordinary coaching session, the lady had put together a list of several points she wanted to cover in her session with Dayo and for Dayo to give her the best coaching ever he was going to have to put this into a 5 hour programme. Yes… this coaching session was going to last for five hours straight.

Dayo starts the session with a bang, he brings out a coaching manual (this manual was the size of a phone book) that he put together to help the lady during the session and then to provide her with continuous information after the session. Two hours into the session and Dayo is still going, covering all the points the young lady wanted. The fourth hour strikes and both Dayo and the lady wonder where the time has gone. Dayo has still got the same high level of energy at the fourth hour as he did when he first started. Dayo finishes at 1 o’clock but this is only the first part of the marathon that Dayo has to cover.

Onto Canary Wharf, Docklands where there is a luncheon event organised by Redeemed Christian Church of God Redemption Parish to help raise funds for the up keep of their church. This is the second part to Dayo’s day, he’s been invited to give a talk and he’s got to think on his feet. The challenge was, to give a talk that would both inspire everyone, but also remind them why they were there. Dayo rises to the challenge; he talks about the need to have a work, life balance. Remembering and acknowledging loved ones. He then swiftly moves on to his life story expressing how anyone can achieve what they want, the same way he was able to, this nicely links on to the purpose of the event, raising funds for the church. Everybody is clapping and nodding in agreement; you can sense that they all feel like they can do anything. The luncheon finishes at 5.30 pm but Dayo’s day is still going, his marathon hasn’t finished yet.

Next stop Crayford, if you’re wondering where Crayford is, well it’s in Bexley, a bit of a drive from Canary Wharf but not that hard to get to. Dayo had been invited as a special guest of honour to give a motivational talk at the Gateway Chapel in Crayford by a young man Emmanual Osobu who just stated a company Emmanuel Drummonds & Co. Last month he sent Dayo an email that “I have been a fan of yours ever since you came on New Dawn with Funmi Iyanda... The words you spoke that day made me, those words turned my life around. I would want to use this opportunity to invite you to the product of a company you gave birth to indirectly through the words of your mouth.”

The event was a Gospel Expo, there were Gospel groups and musicians who performed heavenly and one of the artistes was Yoland Brown. Now Yolanda Brown had previously been a guest on Dayo’s talk show Arize, so it was a pleasure to meet with her again. Since the room was filled with people who were already lifted by the inspiring music, Dayo came out and greeted everyone with a high energy introduction, he felt good, he had the ‘James Brown’ I feel good feeling, everyone laughed and applauded him. Dayo’s talk covered how to face adversity and overcome it, he let everyone know how unique and special they all were, and again, if he could do it, they could do it to. At this point it was 9.30 pm and dark outside, Dayo was still going.

Now, you must be thinking, is there an end to this day, well yes there is. Well not until Dayo attends his last event by Centre for Democracy and Development’s second annual West Africa Night to celebrate the achievements of the West African Diaspora. The event took place at Amnesty International’s Human Right Action Centre in Shoreditch. Dayo was invited here to take part in this special event. This was an entertaining event with good music by Dele Sosinmi, good food and an excellent forum to network. But it was late now, 11.30 pm to be precise. Dayo had crossed the line. He had finished his marathon day. The London marathon lasted 6 hours 30 minutes but Saturday’s marathon lasted 15 hours and 30 minutes.
